The 1987 Collection
1987 was the first year of production for Galoob Micro Machines. These sets can be found with either 1985 or 1987 copyright details on the bottom. There were 11 sets released, but variations exist (see the following section). The same packaging style was used in 1988 for UK and Italy. Additionally, some 1988 vehicles are found with this style of packaging for USA sets as well and are considered extremely rare. (Note: The release year for Galoob is the year after the copyright.)

1987 Prototype Packaging Collections
Various packaging designs were evaluated in 1987 before deciding on a revision in 1988 to the heat sealed blister style. Some of these considerations are very aesthetic, but were never selected. The motorized Rolls Royce is similar to the pin given away at ToyFair in 1987 found in the Promotional subsection of Themes.

1987 Awesome Collections and 20-Vehicle Packs
Non-numbered 20-vehicle packs were released in 1987 titled, "THE AWESOME COLLECTION" which matched the mainline series, but with dramatic variations to the vehicles. In Europe, 20-packs of vehicles are also found matching closer to the mainline vehicles, but with some variations as well. Since the wheels on the European 20-vehicle packs are early, the release for this was likely in spring with the Awesome Collections released in fall.

1987 Vehicle Variations
This appears to be explained based on the seasonal release. The Spring vs Fall catalogs imply 2 releases each year. The 1985 copyright sets would be the initial release and the updated 1987 copyright sets are the second.

1987 Foreign Collections
1987 Collections are known to be released with identifiable differences from France, Italy, Australia, UK, Canada, and Japan. There was also a three-vehicle variation termed, "MICRO COLLECTION" that was sold in Canada and the UK.

1987 Error Collections
These collections include swapped vehicles from other sets and significant enough vehicle differences to be labeled as errors.
